Authoring Tools

To the Editor: Hello, I was wondering if you have any VRML authoring tools, and are they free?

Dave :)

Editor: Few are actually free, though there are several authoring tools with trial versions that can be downloaded. See the articles on Live3D Tricks and Getting Started with VRML for some links. Our September issue will include an article on authoring tools, so subscribe to VRMLSite to get a notice when the September issue is released.

Feature Story Suggestion

To the Editor:

Ah, the Internet, the supposed level playing field that really isn't so. 50,000 people have so far applauded the VRML world put together by my nine year old Joseph, complete with the pre-2.0 animation offered by Live3D. At least that many have also visited the Web Multimedia Tour, which offers similar information to VRMLSite Magazine on VRML, including, I'll bet more links, and DAILY updates on what's happening in the VRML community. Both sites are showing up randomly on demo PC's at computer trade shows all over the world, and have been featured in magazines such as Newsweek and WebMaster Magazine and in local newspapers as far-flung as Korea. I myself speak about this to international consortiums of Fortune 500 companies, and trade emails with folks such as Dan Greening. There's a real story to tell here.

So what do we get from Adrian, one of the leaders of the community ? A form letter. In other words, you aren't even aware of these high-profile, highly-effective, prototypical examples of the general public talking about and adopting VRML, the very phenomenon you and others have cited as a primary goal.

Well, I'll add VRMLSite to the tour, and probably read the first couple of issues, but I'm pretty fed up with this. If you were really paying attention, we'd have been featured in the first issue.

2 Gzip or not 2 Gzip

To the Editor:

How come companies promoting VRML rarely include compressed versions of their VRML URLs? "Yes, let's convince everyone that VRML worlds do really take 1MB!"

NOT!
